The Procession of Our Lady is a permanent fixture of the Halle calendar. This special procession celebrates the Black Madonna of Halle and heads out onto the city streets every two years on Whit Sunday.
The oldest reference to a procession taking place in Halle dates back to 1335. Most likely, this was a prayer procession. Even though the exact format of the Procession of Our Lady has seen many changes over the years, veneration of Our Lady has always been the central tenet. These days, the procession consists of two main parts. The first part recounts the history of Halle, with a strong focus on the history of processions and pilgrimages to the city. The second part of the procession is devoted to Our Lady.
